  • How should I pack my pottery?
Pack your pottery pieces in a sturdy box with ample cushioning. Use bubble wrap, newspaper, tissue paper, honey comb paper or towels to secure each piece individually, ensuring they don't touch each other. Fragile parts like handles or spouts should be given extra padding. Make sure the pieces are tightly packed and the box is filled so that the pieces don’t shift during transit.
  • How long does it take until my pieces are ready?
The turnaround time for firing depends on the type of firing and our current workload. Typically, it takes about 1-2 weeks from the time we receive your pottery until it's ready. We'll give you an estimated completion date when you make your booking and notify you once your pieces are ready.
  • What if something breaks in transit?
We handle all pottery pieces with great care, whether it's during pick-up or when you drop them off. However, the nature of ceramic items means they can be delicate, and breaks can occur, especially if not packed properly. We recommend packing your pieces securely with ample cushioning to prevent damage. Please note, Kiln Firing Sydney is not responsible for any damages that occur.
  • What temperatures do you fire at?
We offer a range of firing temperatures to suit different types of ceramics. Our communal firings are typically at Cone 06 (999°C), Cone 6 (1222°C), and Cone 10 (1285°C). For private firings, we can accommodate a variety of temperatures, from Cone 010 (903°C) up to Cone 10 (1285°C).
  • Can I specify a particular kiln atmosphere for my firing?
Our standard firings are done in an oxidation atmosphere. If you require a specific atmosphere, such as reduction, please contact us to discuss the feasibility and any additional costs involved.
  • How do I know how much shelf space to book?
Estimate the shelf space based on the size and number of your pieces. We offer half and full shelf bookings. If you're unsure, feel free to contact us with the dimensions of your pieces, and we can assist you in determining the required space.
  • What happens if my piece doesn’t turn out as expected?
While we strive for the best results, the nature of ceramics firing can sometimes lead to unexpected outcomes. We cannot offer refunds for firing results but will work with you to understand what happened and how to improve in future firings.
  • Do I need to clean the bottoms of my glazed pieces?
Yes, please ensure the bottom of your glazed pieces are free from glaze to avoid them sticking to the kiln shelves. The base and at least 5mm above the base should be glaze-free. If you need to glaze close to the base, contact us for alternative firing options.
  • What types of clay and glazes can I use for my pieces?
We fire most types of commercially available clays and glazes. However, if you're using unusual or experimental materials, please contact us first to ensure they're compatible with our firing temperatures and kiln atmosphere.
  • Do you offer glazing services?
Currently, we do not offer glazing services. You need to glaze your pieces before bringing them in for firing.
  • What is the process for drop-off and pick-up?
You can drop off your pieces at our drop-off/collection box at any time. We also offer a collection and delivery service within select areas for an additional fee. This can be selected upon check out.
  • What should I do if I need to cancel or reschedule my booking?
If you need to cancel or reschedule, please contact us as soon as possible. We can accommodate changes based on availability, but please be aware that late cancellations may incur a fee.
  • How do I prepare my pieces for bisque firing?
Ensure your pieces are bone dry and free of any surface debris. If the pieces are not thoroughly dried, they may explode in the kiln, damaging other works.
  • Can I pack my pieces into the kiln?
We typically handle this, but arrangements can be made for you to pack/unpack fragile or heavy work. If you would like to arrange this please send an photo of your piece with your enquiry to Info@KilnFiringSydney.com .
